Puppet magic

Magical! I have created my first animated ‘gif’ file to showcase ‘Ziggy’, my newest creative endeavour!

Over the weekend, I attended a murder mystery dinner with some friends. I am on the far right of this animation, sporting a fine mascara moustache. Ziggy was my puppet; I was cast as a ventriloquist in the 1930s, but I didn’t have enough time to make a puppet with a moving mouth, so a rotating head was as far as I got. He is made of plaster – I coloured him with black ink, modelled on Victorian vaudeville seaside acts.  I’ll put up some better images soon. I just thought I’d bring the picture alive! Enjoy!

That’s a wrap!

The Wrap magazine called for graphic design and illustration submissions for the upcoming second issue. Basically the magazine is a showcase of new work, as well as being made of several pieces of wrapping paper. This is my offering. I have to concede that once again, I have entered a competition with one day to go… I knew about it before I went away to Singapore, but I was working too hard (and then playing too hard) to get started. Yesterday I made a start on these tape eared bunnies. I hope you like them – I think they’re rather entertaining, if slightly unsettling! I hope to change the colours and perhaps draw some more variations on a theme.

Overall central

The finished articles: I did finish these two weeks ago, but never managed to get them online! These are the shipping safety posters I’ve been banging on about. The originals were drawn in pencil and were confusing and out of shape, now I’m not terribly good at drawing perspective, but on one poster I didn’t even know what was going on. Thankfully we’re all pleased about how these ones turned out.

They’re not super exciting as far as artwork goes, but it was a fun exercise for me – I learned a little bit about containers and ship equipment. A week or so ago, I even got to meet my employer in Singapore (I was there already – I’m not special enough to be flown out specially to do drawings!). Apparently the left hand poster is for tug or barge safety (and is in Bahasa – I created both posters in English and Bahasa) and the right one is just for shipping container beds. All in a week’s work!
